Sad news in the war on civil liberties err drugs
Seems that the .gov would rather let Angel Raich die an agonizing death than smoke a little weed. Jed says it for me:
You know the drill; even if the state in which your reside and smoke has legalized medical use of marijuana, the feds can still bust your ass. It is a disgrace and an abomination that the federal government is spending our tax dollars to go after people who are sick and dying. Neither Angel Raich, and others like her, nor those who grow pot to supply these people, are a in any way a public harm or threat. So why do we treat them like criminals?
In The War on Drugs, drugs are winning.

“So why do we treat them like criminals?”
It’s part of the agenda of globalism and multi-culturalism; the altars at which most of officialdom worships. The American people are the enemy and these are preludes to a greater police-state to be imposed by global police and troops. Our military is being trained in urban warfare elsewhere and they are starting to recruit foreign troops and have been basing them here for sometime. They’ll be much more likely to take orders and do what needs to be done with native “domestic terrorists”.

Uh, er…no. I really don’t see the connection to oneworldism via pot.
It’s just that the sanctimonious prohibitionst streak we have in this country carries on unabated. It’s the same mentality that makes gun control advocates a problem, that makes people in some states want to ban sex toys, etc.
The puritanical anti-personal choice movement sees pot as a real serious problem (hint: it’s not) and one that we need the Feds to save us from.
Infuriating.

Sebastian, it ain’t so much puritanical; it’s tyranny. The “war on drugs”, the anti-gun agenda, the “war on terror”, it’s all more tyranny; the administration and enforcement of which will be more efficient with globalist enforcers.

I’m with you there, tyranny is the opposite of freedom, and the very best definition of freedom is letting other people make choices for themselves that you wouldn’t make for you.

It almost seems like our mall-ninja clad, paramilitary “police” forces are so busy busting down the doors of the sick and dying they just can’t be bothered with illegal immigrants driving vans loaded with seven or eight hundreds pounds of pot across the border.

I’m firmly on Raich’s side, but I find the rhetoric a tad over the top. She claims to be the walking dead, that this is a death sentence for her, and I just don’t believe it. I’m a very strong supporter of across-the-board drug legalization, but I’m highly skeptical of her claims that weed is keeping her alive by stimulating her appetite and suppressing pain.
Moreover, if it is a matter of life or death, she could just go toke up in Canada. It’s a drastic measure that she shouldn’t have to take, but it’s a better option than, you know, starving to death.

Hey BH,
Its still against the law to toke up in Canada. The only thing that has changed is that its now a fine rather than jail time and what not. Plus, she could risk extradition.

Yeah, little hard-pressed to believe pot is keeping someone alive. There are significantly more effective appetite and pain medications available through conventional means.
For that matter, you don’t need to be some tyrant to want to ban use of marijuana. Unlike alcohol or most legal drugs, there is a significant long-term effect in terms of neurology : moderate or heavy use can cause significant short-term memory issues for days or weeks after exposure (while the effects of alcohol are typically reduced to hangover after ~8 hours).
Like LSD, regardless of the amount of damage it does the user (which I don’t give a damn about), it makes the user actively dangerous for long time after use. This brings us to the compelling state interest point : I’d like to get to work today, and can’t do that with six stoners taking point on i-75.
There are a good number of tyrants that use marijuana and other drugs as a method of attack, but that’s the case for everything.
