Another semi-auto is a machine gun
Over at subguns, they’re reporting that Century’s Romanian PSL-54c (a semi-auto AK lookalike) has been reclassified by the ATF as a machine gun. Apparently, the receiver has hole in it for the auto sear. Century has welded those holes shut but that isn’t good enough. Once a machine gun, always a machine gun.
The ATF crackdown on semi-autos continues.
Update: And if you have a Century Kalashnikov style rifle, you may want to pop the receiver cover off and have a peak inside to see if there’s a weld in there.

Oh Great. I’ll have to check mine. Assholes.

Yeah, we just got hit by this, thanks to the one we sold.
Goddam Romanians and their RPK-receiver sniper rifles causing me paperwork grief…

The hole, before welding, probably put the gun in the “readily converted to” category. And there is no going back. As a 07 FFL with tax stamp I can convert a semi AK to select fire as a LE sales sample, but as soon as the holes are drilled, it becomes a machine gun forever even if the select fire parts are never installed. As the owner of a WASR, would this ever be a problem for me??
March 16th, 2007 at 2:24 pm
Countertop — The WASR series, like anything else, should not be a problem unless ATF-NFA says that it is. On the other hand, I’m not a firearms lawyer! Maybe some other readers have better info. Jack.

You need to call Century’s vermont office to find out if yours was one of the welded up RPKs:
800-270-2767, M-F 8-5 EST, and have your serial number ready.

If they are gonna treat you like a criminal, might as well act like one. Drill the weld out then wait for them to come and get ’em.

To be technically correit’s not a “crackdown on semi-autos”, but a crackdown on idiot importers who build semiautos on full-auto receivers when they know good and goddam well what the rules are on that.
If I were driving a Formula One car down the road and got pulled over for not being street legal, would we say “the crackdown on manual-transmission cars continues”?
March 16th, 2007 at 9:27 pm
Whoops.
That should read “To be technically correct, it’s not“

No, it’s a crack down on semi-autos that happen to be imported.
And I’d lay odds that century had an approval letter and then the ATF changed it’s mind. Since that happens about once a month these days.

My PSL it turns out was imported by Intrac rather than Century. Whew. So if the ATF is listening, you can call off any “visit” you might have planned.

I have a Romak III/PSL built by TN Guns, picked it up last year. I’ll have to check it out when I get home. Was it only CAI assembled PSLs?

How about the Romak 3?
I have one I got years ago from AIM. I think Intrac of Tn imported it.
Can someone send ia diagram of where this welded hole is?
