CCW in Alabama
I always assumed that Alabama was a shall-issue state. Turns out it is not but, according to my sources, it may as well be. Chuck has more on how the local sheriff’s rule their fiefdoms:
Since Alabama is a hodge podge of separate county’s with different rules for issuing a state concealed carry, would you be willing to support a Alabama “shall issue” permit like Georgia, Florida and most other states?
In other Alabama news, I was unaware that Alabama is not particularly NFA friendly and that short barreled shotguns and rifles were banned there. There is, per subguns.com, a bill to remedy that. So, if you’re in Alabama, contact your congressmonkey.

I understand that at least Alabama does honor our Tennessee Gun Carry Permit, which I use when I travel through there on my occasional vacations to the Florida Gulf Coast. Of course, Florida honors Tennessee Gun Permits too.
I’m wondering what the Alabama State Constitution says on the RKBA? If it says anything like the 2nd Amendment or the Tennessee State Constitution’s Declaration of Rights (Article I, Section 26), then arbitrary decisions of sheriffs as to whether one can exercise their right to armed self-defense should be illegal and unconstitutional.

Alabama was slow on reciprocity. When I got my permit, they didn’t recognize it. I found that strange, but they came on board quickly.

Rustmeister,
I think their recognition of our permit was a direct result of a recent Tennessee Law which recognizes any other State’s permit and then Alabama reciprocated.

It was states like Alabama that passed the first gun control laws in the late 19th Century. Of course, in those days “not a person suitable for carrying a gun” meant “colored”…
Not that southern states were the only ones guilty of this. A century later – 1968 – Congress passed a law banning “Saturday Night Specials”, and I doubt there was anyone in Michigan that didn’t understand that as meaning, “cheap pistols like blacks carry”.
