Altho there is a lot of hi-tech, expensive and sometimes unavailabe stuff out there, my favorite PDW is my MAC 10 .45 with the Gemtech suppressor. But, I’m only common folk. Jack.
I’ve never seen anything but pictures of the H&K PDW, but I got to fondle the Knights Armament PDW the other day… seriously cool. I’ve never had any desire to do the NFA thing for a short barreled rifle… well, if they make a civilian version, I might just have to. The 10″ barrel shoots a 6×35 cartridge on the order of 2500fps. I’m not sure about the velocity out of the 8″ barrel, but it’s a bit less. Also, the thing is frikkin’ light. About 4 pounds or so. The lower receiver is a mini-AR receiver and the operating system is a dual-gas piston. I’m still a little confused by that… even looking at the fiddly bits didn’t quite clear that up for me. Though I didn’t get to see the pistons… just the disassembled bolt. –Which, by the way, is basically an AK bolt. Oh, and the dimpling on the barrel is said to be stiffer than fluting (or about the same, can’t remember if it was “at least as rigid” or “more rigid”), and lighter.
Oh, also, thing field strips really, really easily. The very nice KA reps let me try it, and, other than trying to replace the carrier group and such with the bolt in the locked/compressed rather than extended position, it all came apart and went back together exactly how you think it would. Not that that’s all that unusual for modern designs, but I figured I’d note it.
