Speaking of law-breaking
No, I do not think that Sarah Brady broke the law when she bought her son a high-powered sniper rifle as a gift. But, if she had her way, it would be.

Wikipedia doesn’t say whether Sarah Brady and her son James were residents of the same state. If they weren’t, then Sarah violated 18 USC 922(a)(5). It’s part of the Gun Control Act of 1968, which required all interstate transfers to go through an FFL. Technically, all violations of 18 USC 922 are felonies, or would be for us ordinary folks. So do you know whether Sarah and James lived in the same state at the time?
