I needed it about once a month when I was the plant manager of a gold refinery in Jersey City, New Jersey. All for holding thieves that defeated our concentric rings of electronic security, avoided the armed guards outside, and broke into the warehouses. Never said a word, just thumbed back the hammer – the thieves had good experience with armed people and would sit right down and wait for the cops.
I am the only person I have ever met, outside of police or security personnel, that was able to get a blindingly rare NJ CCW permit. This was 25 years ago.
Used a firearm numerous times as a member of the 8th SFG ABN under the command of “Bull” Simon, shots fired.
Used a firearm several times as an LEO, no shots fired
Used a fire arm as a civilian once, no shots fired.
You’ll be asked to sign a release. Read it, see if it says anything about how they will use the footage of you. Almost certainly, the release will say they own the footage, and can do any damn thing they please with it. This certainly includes editing it to make you look stupid or evil or both.
I so wish it were possible to trust them, because I believe it’s crucial for the defensive gun use story to get out there. I’d be very tempted to go on (if I had such a story to tell). I’d want to know if Stossel is running the segment, or if the Brady Bunch is going to get to cherry pick the aired shots.
Maybe you can demand a copy of the raw footage, or have a friend shoot parallel footage. Then, if they try to edit it to make you look as if you advocate trussing up black babies for plinking at the local NRA-sponsored shoot, you’ll have some ammo to fire back with.
Read the release. Find out who’s running the show. Be careful in what you say on camera.
Insist that everyone on the shooting and interview crew, executive producer on down, submit to and pass the NIC, attend a gun safety course, and demonstrate some level of proficiency with a 9mm or .45 handgun.
Or, hey, make ’em pass the requirements for concealed carry in their home state.
If there’s anybody on the crew who’s so much a gun fearing weenie that they refuse, particularly producers, directors, editors, and interviewers, they can’t be trusted.

I have used a gun in defense of another.
A woman who was attacked and forced to the ground by her assailant outside her apartment met me with a .357 pointed in his face.
He quickly stopped the assault and fled. Good choice.
No shots were fired.

careful… ABC has an agenda, and showing CCW holders in a positive light isn’t part of it!

Good point, Chris.

Twice. No shots fired. No police reports. Might as well never have happened, for all the “official” word.
And it’ll be a cold day in hell before I tell AB-fuckin’-C my stories…

Chris and US Cit: Don’t jump to conclusions. John Stossel is a strong gun rights supporter, and I believe he’s on the 20/20 staff.

They’ve also hired Handgun Control Inc personnel to cover firearms cases before.
Given their track record, I’d warn against it.

Hmm, how about this:
Insist that everyone on the shooting and interview crew, executive producer on down, submit to and pass the NIC, attend a gun safety course, and demonstrate some level of proficiency with a 9mm or .45 handgun.
Or, hey, make ’em pass the requirements for concealed carry in their home state.
