Chicks with guns
Here in Central Florida, shooting ranges are reporting a marked increase in the number of women taking aim, signing up for concealed-weapons courses and making purchases. On a recent Saturday, more than 200 women attended a six-hour introductory firearms workshop — an event that keeps growing each year.
Nationwide, the National Rifle Association’s “Women on Target” program has grown from 500 participants in 2000 to 6,000 this year.
“Women are the largest-growing demographic in the gun industry,” NRA spokeswoman Ashley Varner said.

That “six-hour workshop” was the Central Florida Rifle and Pistol Club, Inc.’s Annual Ladies’ Day at the Gun Range event on April 14. At last count, 206 women attended; I worked one of the revolver stations (we had 6 revolver stations, in addition to all other disciplines – IPSC, IDPA, Cowboy, High Power, Smallbore rifle and pistol, air rifle and pistol). I saw only 17% of those shooting revolvers, but for about 60-70% of those it was their first time shooting, and for the remainder most admitted it had been years since they had fired a gun. Next year the event is on April 12. http://www.cfrpc.com
