But handguns serve no sporting purpose. And neither do .50 calibers.

Sporting purpose? Sporting purpose! I don’t need no stinking sporting purpose!
Besides, an 18 inch navy gun is just as sporting as a 22 caliber, rimfire single shot rifle. It just depends on the sport.
Oh, and lets keep in mind that the more powerful, faster handling and less utilitarian automobiles are the ones we call “sports cars”. By that standard then, a full-auto, belt-fed grenade launcher or a 30 mm Gatling gun, would be far more “sporty” than a puny little 50 caliber Barret semi auto.
Also; self defense isn’t a “sport” either, unless you consider it “sporting” to whack a felon who’s threatening your life. Its a matter of perspective I guess, but for sure, the words “sport”, “sporting” or “sporting purposes” do not appear anywhere in the Bill of Rights. Hence, sport is irrelevant to the issue.
Imagine a law regarding speech stating that only sporting publications will be allowed, or that any communication or publication not having a “legitimate sporting purpose” shall be restricted. Ya think that would be a violation of the First Amendment? DUHH!
