Shotgun advice

Sebastian wants some. Actually, I do too. Is there a decent shotgun that can serve as both a dove gun and (in the event I ever take it up) three gun?

I’ve had plenty of luck shooting trap with my Mossberg 835 with fiber optic sites and turkey choke. I’m a pretty regular 17-21 hit guy out of 25 without any practice at all with that gun.

And if the fit ever hit the shan, it’s a good shotgun to have around.

It comes down to fit, using the proper load for the occasion, and magazine capacity. Just about any decent pump or auto will be great for three-gun once fitted with a large mag. For upland hunting you reduce the mag capacity to your state’s requirement and use the light loads. I hunt pheasant and quail both using an IC choke and #6 shot. For doves only, I’d go with smaller shot and lightest loads. A screw choke makes it more versatile, but its not a hard and fast requirement. An IC or Mod-Cyl choke is pretty decent for all around unless you’re going after geese and turkey, in which case you’ll want full or extra full (turkey choke).

We have an 870 in 20 and an Italian auto in 12. Both screw chokes. Both are excellent and I’d use either for anything. Mossberg is good too, among others. The Saiga isn’t bad either. We have those in 20 and 12, and I’d use them interchangeably for the most part, though the Remington pump and the Beretta gas gun are most reliable.

I’ve never owned an over-under or side-by-side, but those who have nice ones love them (again, its about fit, IMO)– the 2-shot is not much good for 3-gun however.

I’ve used Winchester autos twice (2 different guns) and both had multiple stoppages. Just one man’s limited experience there.

The three-dot fire sights are cool, but I get the feeling less fast. Personally I like a dual bead, one midway and one at the muzzle with basic rib, unless you can legally use a reflex sight. Those are fabulous, but alas are illegal for hunting here.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
