I can’t believe it
Don’t look now but Tennessee’s reps might do something smart instead of something dumb. For once.

That’s the usual standard mischief with the state run lottery.
People will think to themselves, “Well, yea it’s a long-shot, but at least the money is going to education”.
The truth of the matter is that it’s not only a long-shot, but that you have a better chance of getting struck by lightning during a shark attack while visiting the Mojave Desert than winning the big prize.
The money that is “earmarked” to go to the public schools may actually go toward education, but the education budget will get de-funded nearly an equal amount. That de-funded money usually goes toward your representative-critter’s favorite vote-buying porkage boondoggle.
This is also usually the case of what happens with the money that’s earmarked in the federal “omnibus anti-crime” bills. But hey, they get to claim that they are putting 100,000 (or whatever) officers on the street. Who could possibly oppose that [/sarcasm] ? The Federal money that’s granted goes directly into funding the salaries of local law enforcement, and the local cash freed up by this could be spent anywhere.

This is not to say that I don’t support lotteries. Hey, I enjoy being exempt from the stupidity tax.

Considering how badly many public schools teach, funding them from the stupidity tax might be considered a sinister positive feedback loop…

I support voluntary taxes. I just wish the State could better utilize the proceeds.
