More gun porn

SKS as scout rifle.

The SKS doesn’t really play nice with the average scope mount, but it is hard to shake a stick at a reliable semi-auto rifle that costs 100-200 bucks.

Affordable, reliable, easy to use– no doubt American gun makers hate ’em.

Russian firearms remind me of the old urban legend about the origin of Fisher’s space pen. The legend goes like this:

During the space race back in the 1960’s, NASA was faced with a major problem. The astronaut needed a pen that would write in the vacuum of space. NASA went to work. At a cost of $1.5 million they developed the “Astronaut Pen”. Some of you may remember. It enjoyed minor success on the commercial market.

The Russians were faced with the same dilemma.

    They used a pencil.

  4. Alcibiades Says:

NASA didn’t develop the space pen, some pen manufacturer did. They didn’t adopt it until after the manufacturer convinced them of its use.

The Russians used normal ball point pens.

Pencils apparently can’t be used due to the risk of breakage and flammability. Grease pencils (aka crayons) were used by NASA (and possibly the Russians).

Yes I know the history. I mentioned it was an urban legend. An amusing one though, which is why I brought it up.

Mounting a scope on the SKS is indeed problematical.

I thought the rear cover mount was too shaky, the rear sight mount too delicate, and the gas tube mount too dangerous.

Initially I drilled and tapped the left side of the receiver (a la combloc mode) and installed a fixed lower mount of my own manufacture that mated with removable top mounts made for Mossberg shotguns. I bought three top mounts and had two scopes and a red-dot I could take on and off…each top mount with a built in shell deflector.

Eventually I found a very solid gas tube cover with a picatinny built in…perfect for the scout pattern. With a 42mm red-dot I can shoot with my normal glasses with both eyes open.

I added an Albanian bolt carrier for the curved hook (I re-machined it to match Yugo’s loose specs) and a 5 round mag for sleekness. Pretty snaky lookin’ now.

Whilst I am getting a bit of heat on other forums for my bubba, I can’t say I much care. Da Bubba is what these old guns are for…and the damn thing is still reliable as a rifle after putting 3000+ rounds down range. I use it more as a plinker than I do my .22s.

  7. Dave Says:

Nice. What brand of gas tube cover did you get that was stable enough?

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
