First of all, pick another gun
Deb alerts us to the first part of an ongoing series of a reporter obtaining a handgun carry permit. The reporter bought a cheap gun that fires an ineffective round.

I think Mr. Completely has a Jennings .22, IIRC he said that the rounds loose anything that resembles stability after 7/10 yards.
I do carry a .22 every now and then, but it’s my Walther P22. Accurate and dependable.

I don’t think those things are even safe to carry.

Ahh, the ubiquitous J-22. No you can’t carry one of those loaded, unless you trust a tiny bit of metal to hold the striker back 24/7 while you have it stuffed in your pocket.
As cheap as they are they do work, until they get worn down, which of course happens a lot sooner with zinc alloy.
Of the cheap jennings guns the most reliable seemed to be the old Raven.
my experience when playing around with J-22’s was hit or miss.
I expect the piece to include a hit job on inexpensive guns, not to mention what they intend to say about those of us inclined to defend ourselves. There was a time when the only gun I could afford was a cheapo .25. Remembering that always keeps my eyes open towards those that might use price as a barrier to firearms ownership.

The reporter’s coverage of his adventure is written in an over-the-top sensationalist manner.
Guns aren’t for everyone.

The amusing thing here is that the dumb@$$ went to a pawn shop and paid $140 for a crappy gun that struggles to bring $90 on Gunbroker.
I wonder if his stories are as well researched as his purchases?

I suggest he buy a pair of shoelaces as well. That way he could use it as somewhat of a bludgeon when it quits working after the first (maybe) shot by tying them through the trigger guard.
Regards,
Rabbit.

Great… A gun-ignorant reporter with a cheap Saturday Nite Special. This should do wonders for the public image of gun owners everywhere…
$140 for this P.O.S.? WTF!?!?! This guy is not just stupid, he’s dumb, too!

He might not be as ignorant as he appears. I don’t know what the gun shop he went to is like but the ones I go to all have helpful guys behind the counter, who will steer a newbie towards as decent a gun as they are able or willing to afford, particularly if they are talking about using it as a self defense weapon.
I could be wrong, but my guess is that he specifically sought out a cheap jennings gun, for purposes yet to be revealed.

By the way, as odd as it might sound, there is actually a forum devoted to those guns.

“By the way, as odd as it might sound, there is actually a forum devoted to those guns.”
That’s like having a forum for grafitti “artists”, which I am certain exists.
About 30 years ago, my grandmother, who lived in a town near East St. Louis, Ill., bought a handgun and went to the police station where she was instructed in its use.
When she died, I assumed that we would find an old S & W K frame, Colt or Ruger, but it was a Titan 25acp.
I don’t recall what we did with it, but I hope that it involved disassembly and a deep body of water.
I wouldn’t even want the thing for a back-up.

It reads a bit “Michael Moorish” IMO.

I owned a J-22, and I thought it was loads of fun. I wouldn’t carry it given any more reasonable choice, but I enjoyed it as a plinker.
It was quite reliable if fed Stingers or other ultra-velocity ammunition.

This reporter, in the liberal capital of Kansas, is obviously doing a hit piece against CCW. I can’t believe all the gullible commenters (not to mention the mall ninjas) at the newspaper’s site, giving the guy all this brilliant advice about guns he should buy – do they really believe that all the gun stores advised him to buy that thing? No, they were trying to sell him a decent gun on which they could make a profit, but finally sold him what he wanted. Did he make any attempt whatsoever to use Google and learn a little about guns and CCW before going shopping? Apparently not. He’s not interested in learning anything – he just wants to tell his bogus “story”.
