Tell a lie often enough and many people will believe it.
Point out the truth to a believer, and it often only reinforces their belief in the lie.
This explains so much, like human-caused global warming, human-caused global cooling (the thing I was told by my teachers to fear as a kid) socialised medicine, public education, and both the Democrat and Republican parties.
