“machine pistol”?
So this guy opened fire in a church service (First Congregational in Neosho, MO).
He first told the kids to get out, then started shooting church “leaders”.
Apparently he had a grudge. Ya think?
This caught my eye, toward the middle of the article:
The gunman had two small-caliber handguns and one 9 mm semi-automatic machine pistol with a large magazine
Where’s the PSH icon?
“one 9 mm semi-automatic machine pistol with a large magazine”
Let’s try to cram as many adjectives into that description as possible, shall we? Make it scary, because people are becoming comfortable with guns, and that can’t happen!
I like how they left the “small-caliber handguns” alone…I guess a .22 revolver just isn’t scary enough (note: I don’t know based on this article that that’s what he used, but I’m willing to bet that it is, since they didn’t really provide any more details).
MSNBC keeps with the “small handgun” description, while adding a new angle of sexual assault to the mix. Maybe it’s revenge? Maybe not. Who can tell? Let’s add more drama!
STL Today just says that he was carrying 3 weapons, choosing to focus on the crime rather than the means. Good on them.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t a machine gun synonymous with an automatic weapon? So…semi-automatic pistols (which only fire one round per trigger pull, as you’re well-aware, I’m sure) wouldn’t be called “machine pistols”.
As Uncle would say, “What media bias?”

Man, that line had more cliches than a Bon Jovi song.

Hahahaha…

Now it could be one of those ultra rare uber cool Glock 18C pistols… But then again they are LEO only right?

Apparently no one else was armed inside the church building to defend their fellow parishioners against or thwart this attack. I suppose the anti-gunners consider that a good thing!

I noticed that description right off; my first reaction was how typical it was, and then wondering how long before the Brady Bunch starts emailing everyone about the evil assault weapons.
August 13th, 2007 at 1:36 pm
Any old weapon will do to perpetrate an assault when you’ve got a captive audience of unarmed victims (like in a church building, school,et c)…which is the apparently way the Brady Bunch likes it.

Well, see, they obviously meant that the firearm was “machined”, and just happened to leave off the whole “d” thing… I mean, guns are artificially made, are they not?
[/sarcasm]
As usual, the media only serves to demonize those currently on the liberal’s shit-lists… and considering people capable and willing to defend themselves qualify, and considering firearms are the best way to do so… yeah.

Kirk: Naw, it couldn’t be a Glock 18, since those aren’t semi-automatic! (Likewise a Beretta 93.)
Though I don’t know that this is media bias so much as utter and complete media ignorance; at least, so ignorant they don’t even know they’re biased.

I agree, reporter stupidity/ignorance is the most likely explanation. However… when I see “9mm semiautomatic machine pistol,” my first thought is “civilian-market semiautomatic variant of a machine pistol — a MAC-10, an Uzi, something like that.
After some hunting I found the homepage of a television station located in Neosho. If you find and watch the video labeled “Chief Interview Pt 2” you’ll find that the police chief himself called it “a semiautomatic machine pistol.” While stupid and uninformed reporters are a dime-a-gross, stupid or uninformed police chiefs are rather less common. Without further information, I’m inclined to accept the police chief’s word as valid, and conclude it was a semiauto version of a machine pistol.

They forgot “assault”.
Dummies.

He was carrying it hidden in an old copy of Look.

According to CNN.com it was a Tech-9.

If CNN said that water was wet I would’nt take their word on it. They have zero credibility with me.
Wolfwalker mentioned a MAC-10, that’s Bryan Miller’s “assault pistol”.

I’ll second that motion! Just passing along something I happened across and cited the source so you’d know how little credibility to give it.

due to the vagaries of justified type, the way today’s NY Sun rendered it in their dead trees version today it was ‘9mmsemiautomaticmachinepistol’. HAH!

I don’t suppose that publishing the make and model of the firearm for the sake of accuracy is an option? Jack.

Ron – Yeah, they probably do. And that’s a damned shame.
BobG – Don’t you receive those emails? You’d be able to tell us all, right? Heh.
Linoge – We’re all machine-gun-carrying retards…didn’t you realize that?
Sigivald – Any ignorance that isn’t corrected falls under the realm of “bias”, IMHO.
wolfwalker – That’s creepy.
Tam – I’d say “well, that’s implied, isn’t it?”, but seeing how they left the other 2 guns alone, I guess it wasn’t…heh.
triticale – Hahaha…
Dave – NICE.
Jack – Uh, no. It’s the media. They don’t do anything for accuracy – only for reaction. 😛
