The Mrs. calls and says Junior’s school offers a service where a private agency will take fingerprints, pictures, descriptions, etc. of Junior to be retained in the event she (God forbid) goes missing. I’m not opposed to the idea (provided it’s not some state mandated thing) and think if parents want to do that on their own that is fine. She calls me and the conversation goes a bit like this:
The Mrs.: I just wanted to make sure you were OK with that.
Me: Sounds fine to me.
The Mrs.: Because you’re kinda weird about stuff like that.
Moi? No idea what she’s talking about.
Oh, and I’ll save you the trouble: it’s a scam. Seems dude shows up, gives you a kit to do this yourself and you keep the kit in a safe place, and then he tries to sell you life insurance.

There are programs out there that will make an ID card for your kid with fingerpriints on it. No catch that I know of. They usually announce it on the news as a community service thing.
I had one on my kid back where he was like 5 or something.

She’s right.
Also, check your local law enforcement. Many will do a lot of that for free.

The Shriners also do it for free. And don’t try to sell you insurance. They even make a quick video.
Of course, you could just take 20 minutes out of your day and do it yourself, too…

Yeah, it’s a great way for them to compile databases of everyone’s fingerprints.

Yep
We had it done at the local Auto Zone. Guy was set up there. Took pictures, prints, etc and put them in a packet. Didn’t try to sell us life insurance (well, I didn’t let him get that far) but he was pushing sales of books and educational software for children.
