I’ve seen this movie
Villagers in southern Peru were struck by a mysterious illness after a meteorite made a fiery crash to Earth in their area, regional authorities said Monday.
Around midday Saturday, villagers were startled by an explosion and a fireball that many were convinced was an airplane crashing near their remote village, located in the high Andes department of Puno in the Desaguadero region, near the border with Bolivia.
Residents complained of headaches and vomiting brought on by a “strange odor,” local health department official Jorge Lopez told Peruvian radio RPP.

Probably scored a direct hit on somebody’s septic tank.

It’s Bolivia. Thee are still active volcanic regions there… tack that in with boiling water coming from the hole, and I bet that the “strange odor” is venting gasses and the “mystery illness” is hydrogen sulfide and/or carbon dioxide poisoning.

I am unclear on how Bush did this. But we know he did.

#9, clearly you are not up on the state of “Star Wars” space weapon technology!: Clearly this was a test of the long rumored tungsten/depleted uranium based Kinetic-Energy Strike Weapons (‘Rods from God’). It’s all part of the ‘American Theocracy’ master plan!
(you read it here first!)
Sadly, while we can all laugh about this, as you point out, it’s only a matter of minutes until a similar theory gains traction on DailyKos and the other nutroots sites…

Hydrogen sulfide is deadly. It is a calcium scavenger and eventually migrates to the brain and destroys it. If those people aren’t dying it isn’t hydrogen sulfide. A simple treatment involves application of a calcium paste on the skin and it will migrate there to then be wiped away before it destroys bones and brain. If in the eyes, the only treatment is immediate removal.

I think it is a mud volcano. The villagers saw a nice fireball (they are pretty common) and then drove out into the desert and found this nice big crater venting some sort of toxic gas. A lot of mud volcano gas are hydrocarbons which can cause illness. Hope no one lights a cigarrette.
