Muzzle Loaders & NFA

Ahab asks:

Are black powder firearms subject to the NFA laws?

You’ll recall that muzzle loaders aren’t even firearms, per federal firearms law. As such, a non-firearm can’t be subject to firearms laws. Seems the guys at subguns.com say he can get his hacksaw ready. As do most folks in comments there.

Now, where do I get a cheap one?

Man, these gun laws are needlessly complex.

Try gunbroker.com and search the blackpowder section for “shotguns”.

I believe the law actually works something like: “They are not considered firearms unless they are used as a firearm in the commission of a crime.” I forget if that is a state or federal thing though.

The Dick’s by me had some cheap muzzleloaders on sale for $115 the other day.

I wonder if you could convert a muzzle loader to use a cartridge fed through the muzzle, allowing you to quickly load and fire (mechanically), while still being – technically – a ‘muzzle loader’…. ? 🙂

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
