I, for one, blame the pomegranate lobby
They do seem popular lately. I’ve always enjoyed them myself. Now that they’re popular, they’ve doubled in price at the local grocery store. And there’s all kinds of pomegranate juices these days. Here’s a handy tip on how to prepare them.
Also, don’t rule out the juice you buy at the store. Mix a bit of juice with vodka for Pometini (yummy) and (my favorite for a refreshing summer drink) is to mix some juice with a bit of vodka, a little sugar, and some carbonated water over ice for a pomegranate spritzer. Garnish with an orange slice.

The recent jump in the popularity of the pomegranate is not what drove the price up. There was a big freeze earlier this year in Southern California, wiping out a lot of the citrus, avocado, and pomegranate crop. The dip in supply coupled, with rising fuel costs (driving up shiping costs) has resulted in a pretty big price increse for these crops. Thankfully, my family’s pomegranate crop made it through the frost unscathed. Unfortunately, our avocados didn’t fare as well.

Man, my mom used to make pomegranate jelly back in the 70’s (we had a row of bushes about 50 feet long). Slap that stuff on some buttered toast and I was in heaven.
