Unemployed due to the nanny state

Seen at Braisted’s:

Rena Doss, another 20-year-old bartender who lost her job this week, said the smoking ban has left her in a difficult situation.

“I chose to work there. I don’t smoke, and nobody was blowing smoke in my face,” she said. “This was a good-paying job for me, and I have bills to pay. What am I supposed to do now?”

Well, I hear there’s good money in slightly less taxed smokes and booze across state lines.

Conventional Wisdom

Remember, it’s us pro-gun folks who advocate violence against those we disagree with.

It’s unpossible

Laura Washington is back asking that all black politicians support gun control:

Burns is making gun control his signature campaign issue. “It’s a no-brainer,” he said. “I’ve lived in Woodlawn. I’ve lived in Washington Park. I live in Kenwood now, and gun violence is a serious problem in our community.”

If by no-brainer you mean your position on the issue doesn’t require you to have a brain. Continuing:

Indeed. Every black politician in America should follow his lead. Last school year, 34 children were gunned down in Chicago. It is unconscionable that a black lawmaker would retreat from stricter gun laws. Guns are killing our kids.

How? Handguns are banned in Chicago.

It’s about time someone took on the People of the Gun.

Like I said before, bring it.

Update: Kevin writes her another letter.

Springfield M6 Survival

I’ve heard good things about the Springfield Armory M6. But, man, is it ugly.

NRA & Machine Guns

The NFA community is a bit upset with the NRA because Chris Cox said that the NRA never supported machine guns. IIRC, Sandy Froman is an NFA weapons holder as are plenty of other members, I’m sure. I know that the NFA community often expresses its displeasure with how the NRA seems to ignore them. The NRA is way wrong on this one. But it is a tough sell to people who don’t know much about guns. Another method to approach this issue would have been to note how only two lawfully owned machine guns have ever been used in a crime. That NFA weapons, in general, are almost never used in crimes. And that the process for getting an NFA weapon is quite extensive.

Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Ownership: You’ll lose Parker/Heller

Well, that’s what they may as well have said. Seems that the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Ownership tried to get the DC mayor to reform DC’s gun laws instead of pushing the appeal:

Helmke, of the Brady Campaign, said the group suggested to Washington that it rework its gun laws rather than press on with an appeal. A broad Supreme Court ruling on the Second Amendment could jeopardize a variety of laws, including waiting periods for handgun sales and California’s machine gun ban, he said.

It’s what they’re afraid of.

Sebastian has more.

Holy Crap

So, a policeman went nuts and started killing high school kids. A policeman who may have been a jealous boyfriend of one of the kids. The man was 20 years-old. Don’t you have to be 21 to carry a weapon?

this is for the people of the gun

Robb is people too.

New media gun term

High velocity assault rifle. How fast can these guns travel?

Federalism

Seems the ATF is not a fan of it:

National groups on both sides of the gun control debate are training their sights on Wyoming.

The state has been waging a legal fight to uphold a 2004 state law that allows people convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence to regain their right to own a firearm by having their record expunged.

Although all states have the authority to restore gun rights, the federal government objected to the Wyoming law. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said it would not recognize the state’s law, arguing convictions were not being truly expunged because they can be used to enhance a sentence in a subsequent case.

Recall also that there are ways to have your record expunged in the eyes of the feds but that the program has never been funded. HR2640 could do a lot if it were amended to require funding for such instances.

Spam

Over at the Firearm Blog, Steve notes he’s getting some spam from gun maker Double Star. First of all, I have a few Double Star products (two lowers, a light weight upper, and more). They and their sister company (J&T Distributing – who I have pimped before) make good stuff and sell it at reasonable prices. With my bias out of the way, I’m wondering if they hired some web marketing person and that they’re doing this? The IP resolves in Colorado and these guys are in Kentucky. The spam is a bit annoying, particularly when these guys could likely just buy ads.

Poor McDonald’s

They seem to shell out a lot of money because people are stupid.

Handy stuff to know

Light a smoke with an AK-47.

Keeping ’em down

So, every few years we have these elections. In those elections, all the candidates promise:

  • To take care of veterans
  • To take care of the children
  • To take care of old people
  • We’ve been having elections for a long time. Why hasn’t this stuff been done? I mean, since it’s always promised.

    Commission appointments tossed

    Train wreck:

In accordance with Tenn. Code Ann. §8-44-106(c) the Knox County Commission and its members are permanently enjoined from further violation of Tenn. Code Ann. §8-44-101, et. seq.. More precisely the Knox County Commission and its members are enjoined from engaging in any chance meetings, informal assemblages or electronic communications consisting of, or between, two or more members of the Knox County Commission for purposes of deciding or deliberating public business in circumvention of the spirit or requirements of the Open Meetings Act.

Unlike the majority of states, Tennessee’s Open Meetings Act provides for no penalties against those violating the act. However, a violation of this injunction which will become effective at 12.01 p.m., Friday, October 5, 2007, may result in a prosecution for criminal contempt which, if proved, could result in punishments of imprisonment for a period not to exceed ten (10) days and/or a fine of fifty dollars ($50.00) for each violation.

    Funny

    and sad:

The National Anti- Quartering Association, America’s foremost Third Amendment rights group, held its annual gala in Washington Monday to honor 191 consecutive years of advocating the protection of private homes and property against the unlawful boarding of military personnel.

    The Knox County Recall Petition

Brian Paone is mad as hell, but he is doing something about it. Mr. Paone has offered Knox County Commission both a challenge and a promise.

The challenge is for County Commission to live up to its recent commitment to insure better government. Paone wants County Commission to create a resolution in November to place a recall referendum on the ballot to amend the Knox County Charter to include a recall provision.

The promise to Commission is that if they choose not to pass the resolution for recall Paone and the citizens of Knox County will take the matter into their own hands with a petition drive.

So do you think County Commission will pass a resolution for recall?

Neither do I. Why not get started today? You can download the petition here. Have people sign in ink and hand deliver the petitions to the Knox County Election Commission at the Knox County Courthouse, #218, 300 Main St. in downtown Knoxville.

    Adventure Outdoors

    Good:

QUESTIONING THE LEGALITY of tactics used by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg to sue gun dealers, a federal judge in Atlanta has allowed a defamation suit by a Smyrna gun shop against Bloomberg and other New York City officials to go forward.

I concur with David, it’s a good reason to shop at Adventure Outdoors, inc.

    Picking winners

So, last night on the drive home I was behind a Toyota something or another. On the back were bumper stickers for: John Kerry, Harold Ford Junior, The Mets, and The Predators. I almost called my bookie to bet against the Preds. I liked my odds.

    Kids today

    Wow:

Debbie is a mom from Uxbridge who was in the examination room when the pediatrician asked her 5-year-old, “Does Daddy own a gun?”

When the little girl said yes, the doctor began grilling her and her mom about the number and type of guns, how they are stored, etc.

If the incident had ended there, it would have merely been annoying.

But when a friend in law enforcement let Debbie know that her doctor had filed a report with the police about her family’s (entirely legal) gun ownership, she got mad.

Surely, that is some sort of ethical violation that warrants review of that guy’s license to practice.

    And from the original story:

    They’re watching you right now.

They counted every beer you drank during last night’s Red Sox game.

They see you sneaking out to the garage for a smoke.

They know if you’ve got a gun, and where you keep it.

They’re your kids, and they’re the National Security Agency of the Nanny State.

Kinda timely since, just yesterday, I was talking to a co-worker. Seems her young son (5 or 6) had been participating in D.A.R.E. Her and her husband were drinking beer while watching some game on TeeVee. Her son then screams at her and her husband that they’re both alcoholics. She didn’t know how to react. I understand that there’s a need to inform kids about drugs and alcohol and other things. But that’s ridiculous. Seems parents need to start discussing these things realistically with their kids before they go to school and get their brainwashing.

Schools should educate. Not turn our kids into little Nazis.

    A trend

Another liberal turns pro-gun… strangely, amid crime wave.

    All AK-47 All The Time!!!!

That’s what the news Florida has been. Seems there’s also something else those stories have in common.

    No, Michael

    It’s not just you.

    Parker/Heller update

Looks like the Plaintiffs have filed a response to DC’s cert petition. TP calls it a legal bitch slap.

    Dogs: not tolerant

Well, I’m not surprised that Ivy’s dog is homophobic. After all, mine are racists.
