United Way is a shell game with a 20% rake-off. Your money will go where you designate, and then that much less of everyone else’s will go there so the final outcome is unchanged.
If you really want to do good with your money, eliminate the middleman. Aside from everything else, the United Way book keeping burden means the money which reaches your cause still does less good.
No, no, no. Do NOT donate to CMP through the United Way. Here’s how I understand things work there:
Let’s assume the United Way plans to donate $100 to CMP. If you donate $80 to CMP, the United Way adds $20 to fulfill their $100 pledge, and then sends $80 to another charity. That charity, by the way, could be a charity you disagree with (Planned Parenthood, anyone?). If you want to support CMP, they’re much better off if you send them a $100 check rather than routing it through someone else, and then CMP gets YOUR money AND the United Way’s.
I support the CMP every time I buy a rifle, carbine or ammo from them. There should be some legislation that allows them to sell other military surplus items rather than having them demilled.
