Gun accidents
Reader Shane sends a link to this piece on the truth about gun accidents. The only group smaller is poison by gas in terms of fatalities.

Here’s a good link to causes of death (2005):
http://www.the-eggman.com/writings/death_stats.html
Notice how firearms, being last on the list, also include gang related and self defense shootings? When compared to the other causes, makes you wonder why the Anti’s aren’t focusing our finite economic resources in other areas….

ps…
the link also included accidental deaths. I think it’s a better link because it’s more recent.

I don’t know what the hell i’m talking about. As I look closer, the link says it’s from stats compiled in 2002, but the page said it was updated 2005. at any rate, it’s a nice easy to read chart!

The CDC page has a nice lookup tool that allows you to check fatality data for as recent as 2004. According to that lookup, there were 649 unintentional firearm-related fatalities. Drowning comes in at 3,308.

I cant say a lot about stats but in my 30 years as a Fireman, with at least 10,000 responses, I only responded to 3 incidents involving firearms. 2 suicides and one accidental shooting. Auto accidents, falls, drownings, poisonings, etc. EACH vastly outnumbered firearms incidents.
So I’ll be the first one to call anyone that says accidental shootings are commonplace a liar.
BTW, did I mention that people in general are idiots? Ask any Firefighter, Paramedic, or Cop and they’ll tell you the same thing.
