Actually, if you were to take a strict constructionist viewing of the Ten Commandments, killing in all forms would be bad, and putting other gods ahead of God would be bad, but simply worshipping other gods would be okay, as long as they’re recognized as lesser. 🙂

Uh, no.
The Hebrew root word used in that commandment means ‘murder’, not kill. The use of “kill” is, I believe, a King James English artifact. The connotation of kill today was not the same as it was then. (You wouldn’t say that you slew a home intruder today, but you would have then).
While 400 years is pretty old, it’s not even close to the ‘construction’ of a 3000 year old document. You might even say that the view of ‘all killing is bad’ is the ‘living breathing modern’ version.
