Stainless Mags

Anyone know much about stainless AR mags? Seem like they’d last longer. Decent price too.

Seems fine by me, so long as you stick a good spring and the right follower in it.

  2. Code3Patriot Says:

I’d rather get Magpul’s PMag for three to four bucks more per mag. IMO they are much better built than any stainless/USGI/H&K AR mag.

  3. Chris Byrne Says:

Unless they’ve coated the interior, stainless can gall and bind. They’ve almost certainly coated the interior though.

The lips will be more susceptible to cracking; but they’ll also be stronger and less likely to deform.

They may cause slightly increased wear in the mqag wells, and to the mag catches.

All in all I’d say a wash.

Stainless steel galls when it’s rubbing against another stainless steel surface of a similar alloy composition. This is why 2 tone pistols were all the rage 20 years ago and why today’s stainless pistols are made out of slightly different alloys. Seeing as how the SS body is going into an aluminum receiver, with a synthetic follower going up and down it, propelled by a chrome-silicon spring, I don’t think galling is a problem you’re going to have.

Personally, I think Magpuls Pmags are the way to go for a 5.56 rifle. But for a 6.8 SPC gun, Cproducts SS mags are the bomb diggedy shiznit.

  5. Chris Byrne Says:

PDB, stainless galls because it is significantly harder at the surface than the dissimilar metals it rubs against. It doesn’t have to be carbon steel, it can be any other metal.

Brass is non galling, but bare aluminum is not, nor are other forms of bare steel.

So some ammo might have a problem unless they teflon or moly coat the inside of the mag. As I said, though; it’s likely that they did.

C-products has had some QC issues. They have a track record of making it right, but why screw around with that when you can spend a little more and have it right the first time.

The A.C.T.S. (http://www.actshooters.com) group did a group buy of them a while back and there were MANY failures in that batch. Other shooters that purchased the mags independantly also have had problems.

Mine have been O.K. some others have been O.K., but I will buy P-mags before I buy CPs again.

  7. Robert Says:

How much longer do they HAVE to last? I still have the first ones I ever bought. Only shoot about 3000 rounds of match ammo a year though.

They don’t seem to be wearing. They were old when I got them. I don’t think I have ever heard of a mag wearing out.

Me, I’m still using the Colt 20 rounders from 25 years ago. Haven’t had any problems yet…

  9. Mike Says:

I’d go with the PMAG. The company has a better track record.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
