Well, technically, it is propaganda, in the original definition of the term, anyway. From Meriam-Webster:
propaganda
Main Entry:
pro·pa·gan·da
Pronunciation:
\ˌprä-pə-ˈgan-də, ˌprō-\
Function:
noun
Etymology:
New Latin, from Congregatio de propaganda fide Congregation for propagating the faith, organization established by Pope Gregory XV died 1623
Date:
1718
1capitalized : a congregation of the Roman curia having jurisdiction over missionary territories and related institutions
2: the spreading of ideas, information, or rumor for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a person
3: ideas, facts, or allegations spread deliberately to further one’s cause or to damage an opposing cause; also : a public action having such an effect
That is pretty much what you, I, the Brady Bunch, and everyone else involved in this debate (or any other debate) is involved in.
Of course, both you and the person who wrote that blog post meant it in the “new” meaning of the term, that is lies told to trick people into changing their opinion. It is unfortunate that the meaning of that word has been twisted so. I guess we have Goebbels to thank for that.
In any case, as far as Oleg’s work goes, it is fantastic propaganda. It is both well done and factually correct, which makes it extremely effective. It’s probably why the person who wrote that post, and the first couple of readers to respond, acted so viscerally to it. It so challenged their deeply held beliefs that they reacted very poorly. Perhaps, though, if they reflect on why it so challenged their beliefs, and are intellectually honest in the process, they may come change or alter their beliefs. One can only hope (that is, after all, the point of the images).
