The pre-Second Amendment right to bear arms applied only to Protestants, and then only to the extent such arms were “suitable to their condition and as allowed by law.” So if you’re a Catholic, the Second Amendment does indeed “give” you a right you previously did not have, and if you’re anybody else, it certainly augments it.
