Left of the Dial: I say if you can’t hold your liquor maybe you shouldn’t be packing a weapon.
To lawfully drink and to lawfully carry a firearm in our state, you must be 21 years of age.

To carry a gun, it is your God given right and what you do while carrying that gun is no one business. If you use a gun in an unlawful manner, whether you are sober or drinking will bring legal consequences. I won’t give up my right to self-protection just because I have a drink and neither should you.

I’m well aware of the drinking age but, let’s face it, a good number of those under 21 at UT probably drink at a campus paties, etc. Let’s not be naive.
And I wasn’t arguing against anyone’s right…just their wisdom/maturity.

That’s pretty rich. See, what they’re advocating is legislation that only targets those who have permits and they would be 21.

Well, it is naive to base wisdom and maturity on some arbitrary age.
In any case, in TN, it is an offense for anyone, with a permit or even law enforcement, to possess a handgun while under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance. Not to mention, you can’t possess a firearm in a place open to the public where alcohol is served for on-premise consumption.
There seems to be a false assumption that someone who goes through all the trouble to get a carry permit will, upon being confronted by a hot co-ed with beer, decide prison won’t be so bad.
TN Code 39-17-1305. Possession of firearm where alcoholic beverages are served.

What a stupid comment. Despite the stereotype, UT students do not walk to class plastered. All parties where drinking does take place happen off campus, where the campus gun ban doesn’t even apply. To say that students that have legal carrying permits are not smart or mature enough to carry their weapons is the worst argument I have ever heard. I get an email every week from campus police alerting me to the latest mugging that has taken place where a student had to defend against and armed attacker. To say that students should not be able to protect themselves because they like to drink occasionally is not only stupid but wrong.
