They’re dumb. For one thing, yeah, a lot of us gun owners have large collections, meaning that only something like half of American homes contain guns, and in those, not everyone who lives in each of those homes knows what to do with a gun.
Jon: Yes. Canada supposedly has only 32 guns per 100 population. Who says and can prove it? I say they have a lot more and, smartly, aren’t telling. We know their silly registration scheme isn’t working, so who’s going to be dumb enough to admit in some survey that they’re not reporting their arms?
If you want a meaningful “study”, then look at the number of capable shooters, with access to guns and ammunition, in a given area. I for one, can only use one gun at a time, so my other 30 or 40 are of no consequence until I start passing them out to friends and neighbors. OK, maybe I could “use” two at once (sidearm and carbine, for instance). In any case, don’t mess with the U.S., eh?

… because most of mine (and many people I know) do not have theirs on a list somewhere….
We’re not really slacking, we’re just being under-reported…

So what you’re saying is that if hubby and I have, say, 30 firearms between us, that means that 38 out of that 100 are unarmed? Yikes!
