i was visiting ye olde gun store a few months back when this guy came in to sell off his deceased brothers collection… was about 40-50 ammo cans full of stuff, a really nice thumbhole druganov, a really nice M1A, 2 ARs and a nice looking FAL… anyways, after the guy left, i was helping my dealer go through all the mountains of ammo that were involved in the transaction… had to be several cases of 7.62×39 and well over 10K rounds of .22lr… plus about 2 cases of 5.56 and at least 3K rounds of other miscellaneous calibers…

anyways, deep in one of the boxes, my buddy pulls out this ziplock baggie and says, “i dont know what to do with these grease gun mags”… so i look at them and see that they have a metal attachment welded on the end… i recognized them for what they were, but didnt know the caliber… so i had him go get the two ARs that he had just bought… and sure enough, one of them was an olympic arms .45acp… so us being gun guys, we naturally decided that we had to give this one a try… we loaded that sucker up and with iron sights, it was cake to punch out one ragged hole at 25 yards on the indoor range…

anyways, he sold that one off in about 2 weeks… but man that was fun to shoot

I kinda figured that within a year or two of me finishing my 45 carbine someone would finally get off their asses and make a commercially viable 45 lower with a proper AR style mag release. It took me about a year, but I finally finished my suppressed AR-45 last year.

I went the oly upper + cav arms + gg mags route and had SRT do the can. Depending on ammo it is anything from a ragged hole to an 8 moa spray. Once I have money again, I plan to start loading 45 immediately.

So the mags are finally available.
With amazing timing I have the bucks.
And with my luck everyone is back ordered on the flat-top uppers.

Does re-inventing the wheel result in a rounder wheel?

Blowback .45ACP carbines have been around FOREVER. I have a Marlin Camp .45, which after some work on the lower (I still have less than $500 invested), is totally reliable, and a fine weapon out to 50 yards. It uses ordinary 1911 magazines, and now there is a snail drum mag if you want to shoot all day.

Making different caliber uppers for ARs seems to me to be an arcane sort of hobbyist thing, not really practical in any sort of military or even militia sort of way.

BTW, if you WERE going to make a pistol-caliber upper for the AR, it would make MUCH more sense to make it 10mm.

BTW2, if you are more of a Garand-type fanboy than a Stoner type, there are those who do the same thing with Ruger Minis. There is even a 50 Beowulf conversion for the Mini.

Do you have any idea how difficult it is to find marlin 45 carbines? I looked for months before giving up and going the AR-15 route.

Blowback 45 carbines have been around for a long time, but all the current models except the oly arms carbine have been withdrawn from the market for years.

10mm doesn’t make any sense because I was going for a suppressed upper and it is easier to make hard hitting subsonic 45 acp than 10mm.

If you’re talking about the ruger min-14, I’m of the opinion that it is overpriced crap.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
