It’s already working
Update: The cynic in me says we’ll see more of this to avoid challenges that lead to incorporation. After all, Brady tried to talk Fenty out of his appeal.
Update: Ouch: Do the Brady’s still want to keep calling this a victory?

Suspending enforcement is not the same as repealing the law. This could be a knee-jerk reaction to avoid attention and once the storm dies down, quietly resume enforcement. As long as the law remains, theoretically it can be challenged. If they were serious about citizen’s rights, they’d be bringing the issue up to formally repeal the law in wake of the Heller decision.
All it will take is for one officer who “didn’t get the memo” to ruin their master plan. I see this as politics-as-usual and a slap in the face for the citizenry, not a good thing to be praised.

I would LOVE to see more cities follow the Wilmette cave-in, a whole stampede would be wonderful. Just to read the comments there brings joy to my heart.

It’s looking like Morton Grove is following suit.

Wilmette is a relatively wealthy town Northwest of Chicago. They may have had the ban, but there is no way in hell they are going to use taxpayer dollars to oppose Heller. Now Daley, whose city is worse than broke, will piss
away millions to fight it. Just watch.

As long as the ordinance remains on the books, they’re going to get challenged. Not that it matters, anyway; if one city defends the ban, they might as well all join in. The result is going to be the same either way; it’s not as though there were any chance the courts might rule in a way that upheld Chicago’s ban but struck down Wilmette’s, or vice-versa.
