How many times do I have to repeat this; Aluminum foil will block the electric field component of EM waves, but NOT the magnetic component. To successfully block all the signals the NRA and Carl Rove are beaming into your brain from our oil company spy sattelites, you need a ferrous material, and for best protection at all times it should be earth-grounded. (I can say this freely, because the people we’re controlling from the NRA/Carl Rove/oil company sattelites will not be allowed to comprehend this statement)

Aluminum is OK for grounding purposes (don’t forget to use an alligator clip to connect the speaker wire leading from the coper plumbing pipes to your hat); and ferrous material will mitigate magnetic fields (especially with grounding). However, to get the best effect you want mu-metal (think of Magneto’s helmet in X-Men).
The last time I saw anyone actually wearing an aluminum foil hat was at Georgia Tech, in 1989. Don’t ask. GaTech was and is an interesting place.
