Phone Bleg – Updated
A while back, I pondered the iPhone. As cool as it was and as much fun as I had playing with them, I just can’t bring myself to switch to AT&T. And, honestly, I was apprehensive about Apple products because, err, they’re made by Apple.
I opted for the Crackberry Curve.
Update: Another case against the iPhone.

Ditto that. I am a Cingu–I mean, an AT&T customer, but I couldn’t pull the trigger on an iPhone, opting for the Curve. Let’s face it: the iPhone is way cooler than the Curve, but the Curve is way more conducive to productivity than the iPhone.
And if I weren’t a poor writer/blogger, I’d have held out for the forthcoming Blackberry Bold, which has me committing serious acts of electronics lust.

I’ve tested my iPhone on a T-Mobile network: it works fine. Well, at least as well as any iPhone works… I really want just a bit more from my pocket computer.
I’d like to demo a Nokia N95. Pricey, but maybe worth it.

I have to say, AT&T has not thrilled me. Coverage near my home is shit, and the 3G coverage is not always as advertised. Still, when I have coverage, it’s pretty good, and the iPhone switches to using my home Wi-Fi network automagically when I get home. Doesn’t help for phone calls though.
As for the iPhone, I think it’s a marvelous product for the most part. The browser is pretty much full featured, e-mail support is good, the display is excellent, and the user interface is designed very well. On the downside, you have to jailbreak the phone to install non-Apple approved application, there’s no copy and paste (this is the biggest drawback, in my opinion) and if you have an application that goes a little bonkers it can drain your battery in a few hours.
But underneath, it is MacOS. You can run the BSD Subsystem on it, and get an SSH shell to the thing. I could even install a webserver on my phone if I wanted to. I toyed with the idea of getting the blog running off the iPhone for a day just for shits an giggles.

I just bought the iPhone a couple of days ago and love it. I too have withdrawal pangs from Verizon who I was really happy with. Apparently, having to switch carriers is the number one reason given by potential customers as to why they won’t get an iPhone.
I was apprehensive about Apple products because, err, they’re made by Apple.
Just out of curiosity, why? I bought my first Mac laptop last year and won’t ever go back to Windows. In fact, part of my reasoning for getting an iPhone is the easy integration between the Mac and iPhone.

The idea of having to jailbreak my phone to make it usable stinks to me, but they are making the best product right now.
There is an open source project http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Neo_FreeRunner but I dunno it has some issues with being underpowered and isn’t considered ready for general use.

We hate phones and do not even answer the one at home. Leave a freakin’ message. I went and got a free, pay as you go POS, to which I disabled texting – there’s more I would like to disable.

I went with the Nokia E70. Sadly, it has been discontinued. Funny link, though, if you have a moment.

Good choice. The Mrs. and I ended up with Curves as well, albeit by accident. We had opted for Pearls, which were being offered at a fraction of the price, but SunCom was out of Pearls and offered the Curves at the same price.

The “non-biased, side-by-side comparison” is great. (At link above)
