The Rock River Arms LAR-8 mid-length comes closer to a scout rifle then the M1A SOCOM whatever does. http://www.rockriverarms.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=255
Put an Aimpoint on the end of the flat top and it’s almost as far away as the Aimpoint on the SOCOM.
Flip sights might ad a bit of weight, but not much. And you can pick what ever sights you want to boot.
