I know of a guy sent down range from Germany where he spent 3 months in the sand box. While he was gone his wife left him. Before she flew back to the states she called one of those time/temperature numbers and left the phone off the hook. This is Europe where local calls aren’t free; you pay for each “tick”.
Guy got back from his deployment and got hit with a 7,000 USD (after exchange rate) phone bill.

If I had a dollar for every Marine I’ve known who got cleaned out by the Mrs. while he was downrange I’d be pretty well off. Then again, that’s what one can expect when you marry a stripper named Destiny the week after you met her, then entrust her with your bank account before pushing off on a year tour the following month.

Unfortunately it’s not uncommon at all for the “wife” to clean out the account and disappear. We used to have signs similar to wanted posters on the barracks wall for the more egregious violators.

A friend of mine had a brother whose wife not only did that but gave away the dog as well.

A buddy of mine in the Navy had his wife move her boyfriend into their apartment while he was on cruise, clean out his accounts, run up his credit cards and phone bills, moved out right before he returned and had her lawyer serve him papers on the pier.
