If you intend to put a scope on it and do accurate fire at the effective range limits (e.g. sniping boomershooting), the M1A is definitely preferred.
The FAL platform is a good, rugged, reliable battle rifle; its inherent accuracy is poorer than the M1A, but then you can’t build yourself an M1A for $800…
