Bastard
This infuriates me:
A father arrested after his 6-year-old daughter was fatally shot in their Washington state home allegedly told authorities he had been drinking double shots of vodka while cleaning his guns.
Court papers say Richard Peters told detectives he had asked his daughter, Stormy, to bring him the .45-caliber handgun Sunday. He said he must have pulled the trigger, and the girl fell to the floor. She was pronounced dead Monday.
Jesus, I have no words. Well, I will note that the state is pursuing first degree murder charges.

I too am deeply disturbed by this story. Who in their right minds lets a six year old handle real firearms anyway? Then there’s the whole “cleaning the gun and it went off” thing.
It’s just sad.

Gee, if only he was forced to buy a trigger lock with that gun. He sounds like the kind of guy who would have used it responsibly.
Who could have foreseen a tragedy such as this occurring when all four safety rules are violated at once, and mass quantities of vodka are added to the mix?

That said, I’m also 42, with six-year-old daughters. They’ve never seen my guns, let alone handled a loaded one. Not sure when we’ll have “the talk”.

1st Degree Manslaughter, actually.
This is local to me, so I’m keeping an eye on it.

6yo is enough to handle a firearm with adult supervision and–in my opinion–about the right age to begin gun safety with–again, my opinion–a single shot 22.
But neither should you drive, handle a firearm, nor supervise a dangerous operation (i.e. supervise a child handling a firearm) under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Good sense would have prevented this incident.

I’ve had the talk, with my six-year old, and I don’t know anymore that I did the right thing. She keeps asking me when she will be old enough to have a gun. Damn, it’s hard raising your parents.
But I agree that this asshole should be hung upside down over a slow-burning fire.

First of all guns and booze do not mix. I will not touch a firearm or part after 1 sip.
Secondly I agree that this guy should be slow roasted then burn in hell.
Third: My six year old LOVES to go to the range. He has his own .22 rimfire/.410( the rossi with interchangeable barrels) but he “carved” his pumpkin this year with an SKS. 3 rounds at a time. He also shoots my CZ 82 with my hands hovering over his and at most 3 rounds loaded. The rule is that he can touch guns anytime he wants to….AS LONG AS HE ASKS ME FIRST AND I AM WITH HIM. No taboo, no unfulfilled curiosity they are every day objects.
