Damn Yankees
I guess I shouldn’t mention yankees when discussing, err, yankees. Quite a bit of mail about how so and so is a yankee but so and so is not. And apparently there are various qualifiers that distinguish one particular yankee archetype from another.
So, I didn’t mean you, I meant the other guy.

Isn’t that a band?

“Damn yankees” should be written “damnyankees”, according to my friends from the southern US.

I was born and raised in Indiana, but as of this year, I’ve lived in southern Virginia longer than I lived in Indiana. Even so, I was raised on a farm in the country and have always considered myself a redneck (in a good way). I don’t speak with a southern drawl, but I don’t have a Northern lilt either. My accent is pretty neutral.
So…I don’t even know whether I’m a Yankee or not.
No wonder I’m so messed up.

If you don’t know, then you’re a yankee.
If you weren’t, you’d know it.

I moved from Detroit to Mmphis in 1969.
My Mississippi relatives still call me “Yank”.

As I was told by a customer in VA when I was at his plant doing work, I was a Yankee – I was just visiting. If I moved to VA I would be a Damn Yankee since I was not going back north. . .

In the south, anybody from north of the Mason-Dixon line is a Yankee. North of the Mason-Dixon line, anybody from New England is a Yankee. In New England, anybody from the woods in Vermont is a Yankee. In the woods in Vermont, if you live in a log cabin and poop in an outhouse, you are a Yankee.

Me = A Connecticut Yankee in William Penn’s State
😉
(And even that is not fully true, I was raised in San Diego until 10. And born in Cleveland but left around one.)

Pretty much, real yankees are new yorkers. The purest breed of yank are those from New York City. Although, the ones in the city would consider those east of the hudson as being rednecks.

I should say west of the hudson.

What color uniform would you have worn?
That should give the desired answer.

Being Southern is just as much a “State of Mind” as is a birth-right. Our like minded Northern Brother’in are most welcomed into the fold!

Damnyankees… Rebs… Hell, all of you are just eastern pilgrims! 🙂

Variation on what JD said: a yankee is someone from back east who visits; a damn yankee stays.
