Aslo notice that the writer, a Mr Michael David Smith, seems to think that “If you carry a gun around, you’re more likely to hurt yourself than protect yourself” is a “simple fact”
I might write him an email and ask him to back up his statement with some, y’know, facts, but I already hate sportswriters. The only reason I care is because someone might accept his statement of fact wholesale. I’d like to see him issue a retraction of that statement.
He doesn’t seem to have an email link, but there’s a comments section to complain in…
KingsideRook, he may have a point. I cut my thumb pretty badly installing an extended thumb safety on my Browning Hi-Power, once got my finger pinched by a S&W 60 shooting double-action, and even managed to slice the web of my hand re-assembling a Taurus 62. If we include the number of times I’ve been smacked by flying brass from a 1911, the matter is clear.
Since most, if not all, of them are not much smarter than the ball they kick and throw around keeping them away from cars, guns, sharp objects, and normal people might be a good idea. Coaches, like Ditka, included.

I wonder if Ditka also feels that by being a member of the NFL you should give up your right to avoid self incrimination or have your speech silenced?
When you join the NFL, should that mean you have to allow the military to use your house?

I thought the NFL already prohibited players from owning guns?

No, they just prohibit them on NFL premises.

Meanwhile, I have yet to shoot a criminal.

There are tons of NFL players getting in trouble for speeding or car accidents or DUI. Does Ditka propose banning automobile ownership, too?

Most of them are already banned from owning firearms, due to the convicted felon law.

What the NFL and NBA both need is a moral clause. Or hire Bobby Knight to kick the thugs off the teams, one.
Half the NFL players are already prohibited from owning guns because they’re felons.
