Chicks and guns

Breda and mom head to the range.

And Mike wonders why gun people recommend women get 38 snubbies. It seems to be a trend. My personal experience is that women have difficulty with the long, heavy trigger pull on these revolvers.

In my experience this tends to be the recommendation to women who aren’t interested in guns other than a practical “buy it, shoot it a few times, and leave it on the nightstand” way. The idea is that semiautos are just more complicated enough that if you’re not willing to invest in more familiarization and practice, you will screw it up when the time comes and forget how to unload it completely, or forget to rack it if you don’t leave one in the chamber, or forget how to manage the safety, or never learn malfunction drills, or what have you. Whereas revolvers are generally a much simpler point and click interface for those who don’t intend to practice much.

I am not much of a revolver person. I think they’re beautiful and practical in many ways, but I hate that trigger pull. And there’s just something visceral about slamming a magazine home. 🙂

There is one other reason. Depending on the woman and on the age she may not be able to rack the slide. Revolvers are much easier to load and require much less maint. Ex: My mom can’t rack the slide on any auto I own, but has no problem loading a revolver.

My wife just happens to REALLY like Wheel-Guns (as does a male friend of mine) both of them like them because of the simplicity and intuative use. With auto-chucker lots of the working parts are hidden inside the gun away from view. Revolvers everything is in plain view and they come apart for cleaning and inspection at the flick of a switch.

I’m saving my pennies for the XDm 9mm (yes, we will have his and hers XDms … awww, how sweet!) I decided I wanted good stopping power, but not something that puts me on my butt, like a 40. I also want to carry in my bag or pocket, and semi-autos seem more practical for that, without a hammer to get caught on stuff.

I tried a couple of 38s at Coal Creek, but they are too lightweight … I was shooting the ceiling, the floor, my neighbor’s target … The 9mm Glock I tried was managable for me, but too big for concealed carry. The new XDm is quite a bit smaller. But do I hear correctly that a compact is on the way?

I carry a snubbie, with 38spl+P, currently a taurus 605(?). But I would not do the same with the airweight. I will switch to sp101 once I’ve got enough rounds through it. Years ago, I carried a S&W5906 9mm. I like the simplicity of a revolver. I carry a .44mag wheelie in the woods. If the circumstances change enough at work, I plan on switching to an officer size .45acp. Whatever you are comfortable with, carry the &^*% thing.

If I may ask, is the trigger pull issue more or less all snubbie guns? Or low end, or DA revolvers, or what…?

My wife thinks revolvers have sex appeal. I am inclined to agree (as married men often are).

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
