More Kent Williams on Guns
Wants to require a license for gun possession? No support for concealed carry either.

A license for gun possession…. could optimistically could be construed as agreeing with the carry permit.
I heard Rep. Williams being described as a “Goldwater conservative”, which back in the day would be basically a libertarian. But then, that my be too optimistic.
I’ll be happy if Speaker Williams and the majority of House members would simply uphild the wording of Article I, Section 26 of the State Constitution to which they ALL take an oath. The n they would ALL support that we have a RIGHT to keep AND CARRY weapons for self-defense. Requiring a license to exercise a RIGHT is thus unlawful.

H.R. 45 Blair Holt’s Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2009 by Illinois Democrat Bobby Rush.
Amend the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act and prohibit a person from possessing a firearm unless that person has been issued a firearm license.
As Drew Zahn notes, “H.R. 45 is a resurfacing of 2007’s H.R. 2666, which contained much of the same language and was co-sponsored by 15 other representatives and Barack Obama’s current chief of staff, Rahm Emmanuel. H.R. 2666 was assigned to the House Judiciary committee, where no action was taken.”

Kent Williams is a genius.
To remain as Speaker of the House, it must stay 50-49.
If the Republicans gain 1 seat in 2010, he is gone.
If the Democrats gain 1 seat in 2010, he is gone.
If he loses in the primary (like former Senator Mike Williams, who lined up with the Democrats after deceiving his district by running as a Republican), he is gone.
And if it is the Republicans who gain control of the Speaker’s position in 2010, he will not only be gone as speaker, but he will become the least influential member of the House – no small feat given its intellectual constituency. That would likely be followed by a loss in the 2012 primary.
Williams is obviously close with Naifeh (he handed him the gavel back to let him run the session after Naifeh declared him to be the new Speaker), so I have every expectation that they will work together to keep us from carrying weapons in restaurants which serve alcohol.
Whether they will try to foist some kind of FOID garbage (like Illinois) on us remains to be seen.
And this little stunt will also ensure the legislative renewal of the Tn Judicial Selection Plan, which was set to expire on June 30, 2009.
Under such plan, special interest groups get to exert their influence on the selection of appellate judges and Tn Supreme Court Justices.
That’s right, the Tn Bar Association, the Tn Trial Lawyers Association, The Tn Defense Lawyers Association and the Tn Criminal Defense Lawyers Association get to select the slate of nominees from whom the Governor picks an appointee to serve.
The General Assembly trusts us enough to permit us to elect trial court judges, who are the judges we are most likely to appear in front of, of course, while trusting the above-mentioned special interest legal groups to vet and approve appellate judges and Tn Supreme Court justices, whom we are LEAST LIKELY to appear before.
The General Assembly, in essence, selects the lawyers with the ugly goatees who advertise in the Yellow Pages and on Lamar billboards to trust these judges more than it trusts WE THE PEOPLE to elect them.
The Tn Judicial Selection Plan is yet another of Jimmy Naifeh’s pet projects, so expect Kent Williams to do Naifeh’s bidding on it and pretty much everything else Naifeh wants.
I don’t begrudge the Democrats for beating their chests about their little coup, but it will have far-ranging effects, particularly if you like to exercise your Second Amendment rights.

Cannot say as though I agree with his stance on abortions, cigarette/alcohol taxation, the war on (some) drugs, school vouchers, health care, and other specific issues either…
No politician will ever be perfect, and this guy is certainly no different. All said, though, I hope he is better than his predecessor, if only a little.

As for myself, I would be profoundly happy if Naifeh Sr. and Jr. both got the shit beat out of them. Not likely, I know; but I can dream.
