Dangerous people with dangerous ideas
That’s how Orange County views gun activists:
At the board meeting today, Orange County deputies searched gun-rights supporters, especially those wearing CCW buttons, according to those who attended the meeting. Although Sheriff Sandra Hutchens said she would let the permits expire rather than revoke them, her real disdain for freedom is shown by the presence of the SWAT team and the heavyhanded searches of law-abiding residents who wanted to attend the board meeting. Did the sheriff really think that gun supporters are somehow dangerous. I’ve been to gun shows and gun events and have never felt safer.
Ya know, at a public meeting of this sort, it’s probably pretty common to do weapons searches via metal detectors. But a SWAT team?

The heck it is. I attended the public hearing in Seattle regarding Mayor Nickel’s proposed gun ban, and like all other such events in WA, there was not only no screening, but some of the anti-ban folks even open carried. The crowd (and those who signed up to speak) were very strongly anti-ban, and my uneducated guess is that at least half those in attendance were cc’ing.
But I shouldn’t be surprised that things are different in CA (or NY, MA, IL, and NJ) than they are in the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.

You said it yourself a couple posts up…anti-gunners don’t respect the law, so they assume we don’t either.
Also probably has something to do with their inability to distinguish between violent/predatory and violent/protective.
They just assume we’re all violent with no self control.

Sheriff Hutchens has been called before the Board of Supervisors several times to explain her drastic shift in CCW policy and extreme hostility towards gun owners. She’s been defiant and disingenuous at each meeting; the SWAT team frisking protestors is just her latest shot across the bow. It’s generated a lot of ill will in the enthusiast community here in OC, and I’ve personally spoken to a few OC law enforcement personnel who aren’t too keen on the sheriff and her attempt to remake OC in LA’s image, either.
If you’ll forgive a bit of hyperbole, we’ve enjoyed a welcome respite from a lot of California’s hysterical, ignorant anti-gun bias here in Orange County for a number of years. Hutchens seems to want to remind us that no, we really are living in the same banana republic as the rest of the state.
