In NJ
They found a cache of weapons. Which, in NJ, is apparently four. But this is interesting:
Removed from the home were two handguns, a 15 round magazine, and two rifles, including an imitation M1 Carbine, which is illegal assault weapon in New Jersey, according to the chief.
Now, does imitation mean fake? As in a toy? Are fake guns illegal in NJ?

I can only recommend to all citizens of New Jersey: Move.

arby63, That is easier said than done. There is a reason that the road tolls in NJ require you to pay to get out but let you in for free. No one would pay to go there but plenty will pay to get out.

I’m guessing they meant replica (new manufacture) rather than milsurp…

Wait…
Isn’t the M1 Carbine the semi-auto rifle that paratroops carried in WWII?
Wikipedia says a select-fire version exists called the M2.
Anyway, why is the imitation as dangerous as the real thing?

Like JJR, I’m thinking it’s a new-manufacture M1 carbine from Auto Ordnance or something similar. Maybe it’s got that folding wire stock to make it an ‘illegal assault weapon’. Leaves one to wonder how, if it’s illegal to own, he happened to get his hands on one, though.

The only things that don’t count as firearms in NJ are bows & arrows (but not crossbows) and… thrown bricks.
NJ names the M1 carbine by name, folding stock or no. (The Mini-14 on the other hand, needs a folding stock to be considered an “assault weapon”.)

The m1 carbine is banned by name in NJ.
If the auto-ordnance has the magic sigils “M1” on it, or in the name, the poor chump just signed up for Corzine’s newly enhanced sentencing laws.
OTOH, if it is an auto-ord, and it doesn’t have the deadly 2 letter stamp, and it has less than 2 evil features, he might get off on the charges.

My bet is he had a Mini-14 Ranch Rifle.

“Are fake guns illegal in NJ?”
I was beginning to come under the impression that it was illegal to SAY the word ‘gun’ in NJ, unless you were a prosecutor or judge.

NJ defines assault weapon by name (or “substantially similar”) or having a fixed magazine of larger than 15 rounds. (There’s a magazine ban as well). (Shotguns also get some additional bans).
No feature list per se.
