Going south

The southerners I’ve been around always treat “damn yankee” as one word.

Southern California makes me a Yank? I may be from El Norte but I’m souther than you, at least on the map.

I always thought that:
Yank’ = not from ’round here and come down to visit.
Damnyank’ = he stayed.

That seems to be the emerging consensus on my blog – to the extent a three year stint means anything, it presumably means I’m less likely to leave than I was before, ergo, it converts me from Yankee to Damnyankee, and not vice-versa.
That said, I stand by my original pronouncement: if you’re south of I-40, or anywhere near it for that matter, you ain’t a Yankee.

What about the stuporgroup from the 1980s that actually call themselves the Damn Yankees? Did they all move here, too?
