The idea that the state should have to prove your guilt without your help applies here.
The defendant failed the first stage of dealing with authorities when he told the truth instead of saying nothing or denying everything. If he had denied all knowledge of the gun, I doubt the authorities could ever have proven it to be in his possession. Then it would have been a gun which mysteriously appeared in his otherwise legal storage, likely placed there by some criminals…
“Andrew Richardson, 48, accidentally shipped a lethal* revolver and ammunition from America, where he had been living, when he returned to live in the county 12 years ago.”
1) *PSH “hype” language; It’s so lethal you could die from merely touching it? So PC, so very contemporary British, sad to say.
2) How do you “accidentally ship” something?
3) Epic Fail for Royal Mail! (On the other hand, recently UPS stupidly shipped a brick of marijuana–to the wrong person–here in Denton, Texas)
“Instead of handing it in to police he decided to keep it, placing the weapon in storage.”
It being his private property and all, how daft!
“But yesterday a judge at Norwich Crown Court said he had no option but to jail Richardson as the weapon could have easily fallen into the wrong hands.”
Markie Marxist sez: “Of course it’s worthwhile to ruin someone’s life over the existence of a simple, inanimate object! He should have been hanged in chains on the gibbet for five years! Offenses against our Marxist sensibilities are serious offenses against our Marxist sensibilities, which must be respected at all costs because they’re our Marxist sensibilities! It’s just common communist sense, for Karl‘s sake!”

“It is impossible to fathom why you thought it appropriate to keep this lethal weapon and ammunition in storage.”
That is deliberate, bloody minded ignorance.
“The law is concerned here with firearms which are lethal weapons.”
So, my right arm isn’t a lethal weapon? So, if I were to put the Brit twit judgie in a choke hold, he would only make believe die? Bloody lemmings!
