New kinda spam
A new kind of spam is hitting the blog. They’ll actually use the name of a frequent commenter (they’re particularly fond of straightarrow), copy a comment verbatim, then add something like ‘great post’ at the end. And the URL for their name will be some spam site. Anyone else experiencing that?

It’s an old trick. I have gotten those occasionally for the past 4 years or so. I delete them as soon as they are posted.

Yeah, I’ve gotten a couple.

Yeah, me, too, though most of them don’t get through the spam filter.

I’m kind of fond of that guy too. š
No point to make, just felt I should say something.

If you have a comment RSS feed, turning it off may help. (But it may also hurt search engine rankings as I’m pretty sure they prefer RSS feeds to scan through these days.)

Do you mean they like to use Straightarrow on this site, or across the whole W3bz? ‘Cause people will just about always click on whatever Straightarrow urls.
I still don’t think Obama should have taken that question from him at the press conference, though. Made the presidency look weak, and, well, fawning.

Thankfully my blog isn’t popular enough for that.

I get lots of “great post/site” comments with dozens of spam links but nothing that copies other comments.
Just another escalation in the war between spam and sanity.

Great post. You have a wonderful blog.

You are probably looking for a solution. Try asking Laurel at PG&B what she uses.
Check the comment on her comment form. As long as the spammer does not guess what email address (which is never shown) that straightarrow is using, it should work 100%. Of course you’ll have to bless first time users.
Great post. You have a wonderful blog.

I have to echo what Rivrdog said. I first saw this some years ago, then it disappeared, and now it seems to be enjoying a resurgent popularity.

I just looked up their IPs, the country of origin, and blocked the entire freaking country.
Some third world craphole gets internet cafes, and the first thing the residents do is earn really big pennies spamming blogs …

Yup, happens all the time. I haven’t had one copy a commenter yet though.

Yah, that comes in spurts every now and again.
