The rise of Atheism
I’ve noticed a bit of chatter about atheists getting organized. It’s like they’re forming churches or something. Which is odd because I thought one of the branches of atheism was the anti-theists which tend to be more anti-church. The local talk radio had a bit on it this morning and the NYT did too.

See? This is why I call myself a Primitive Southern Atheist. I don’t believe in proselytizing, unlike those in-your-face Missionary Atheists.

Well, do they dance, or don’t they?

Wasn’t “secular humanism” turned into an official religion back in the day?

Makes sense, church is just as much about community as it is about worship. Atheists/Agnostics may not have any interest in the faith aspect, but they still want that sense of community where they can feel comfortable not adhering to a religious dogma.

Tax exemptions are always a good motivation to do something 🙂

I don’t get it.
I don’t believe in gods or goddesses.
Why would I religiously meet up with folks that thought otherwise?
I have lots of friends, some atheist, some religious, lots that I just don’t know what they believe because I really don’t care.
If it’s brought up in conversion, I am interested to talk about it
I won’t look down on you for your beliefs unless you are a nut about them. That applies to atheists as well as those of faith.

Secular humanism WAS turned into a religion (not “official”) back in the day. Check out the Ethical Culture Society, which has held non-theistic services for 130+ years.

I sometimes attend “services” at the North Texas Church of Freethought
(http://www.churchoffreethought.org/)
It’s okay, but I’m still creeped out by the use of the word “church”, which turns a lot of non-theistic people off.
I mostly use Meetup.com to find atheists, freethinkers, agnostics and the like. UU’s work if there’s nothing else around; The joke about them being UU’s believe in one God, more or less.
I’m willing to live & let live; but I’d like it better if I could avoid voting for religious wackos as the only way to protect my gun rights.

many atheists seem to be mad at a God that doesn’t exist.

Actually, cyrus, we aren’t mad at a god that doesn’t exist. We are mad at the whacko followers of a god that does not exist, and who use said non-existent entity to justify bad behavior and the oppression of rights.
The decent followers are just fine and rather pleasant folk to hang out with.
