Crime in Tennessee
I did not know that: Tennessee has the 2nd highest violent crime rate in the nation
Clearly, it’s due to those guns in bars. Oh, wait.

I bet the crime rate drops pretty dramatically if you cut away that festering southwest corner.

I agree, BWM, but Nashville is also in the hunt whenever these “Top 10” lists are published.

This is data from 2006, but it’s also per-capita, so it’s sort of biased against low population states. Assumed source data for his argument: http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0004912.html
Additional reference data regarding Memphis (showing that it’s got the 2nd highest (reported) crime rate of large cities in the US:

Now, I’m no statistical wizard, but removing memphis from the equation makes TN look pretty safe to me, with an outlier like that skewing the results.

Addendum: Nashville made that list too, but it’s still safer than Dallas, Detroit, Columbus, Toledo, Oklahoma City, St. Louis, Seattle, Kansas City, Atlanta, Cincinnati, Stockton, and Charlotte.

I have read that before and they cited Memphis as the cause.
