Win some, lose some
The DC voting rights bill is dead. Unfortunately, it had the repeal of DC’s gun laws attached to it.

I can’t say I’m too terribly upset – the voting rights bill was unconstitutional in the first place, and I’ve never been a fan of attaching unrelated bills in an effort to force their passage. DC does deserve representation in Congress (they do pay taxes, and they are affected by any laws that are passed), but it needs to be done in a Constitutional manner.
To me, the repeal of DC’s gun laws was overshadowed by the Unconstitutionality of the rest of the bill.

I think that’s a large part of why the the gun amendment was added, as a poison pill to kill the bill.

Rob, I think the same thing. It’s a tactic I strongly disagree with, though (regardless of the bill or who does it).

The real reason why it was killed was because Obama would have been forced to sign it.
In the event of that going down, the Obama administration, headed by the most anti-gun POTUS ever, would have signed off on more sunshine pro-RKBA laws in the first half of his first year, then Bush2 did in 8 years in office.
Pretty sad actually.

I’m not too upset – there’s a Heller II in the works over DC’s blatantly ignoring Heller I

I was opposed to the gun rights bill being attached to the grievously unconstitutional DC Voting “Rights” act because no matter what happens, DC residents will get their rights back. It won’t be easy, but it will happen.
I see this a victory.
