The Firearm Blog reports that the MIL-STD 1913 (the Picatinny rail) is about to retire and be replaced by STANAG 4694 (Nato Accessory Rail).

Talk about fixing something that ain’t broke (so far as I can tell)…

I do tend to like the idea of making it a powered rail with one overall battery, it could save a good deal of weight and that’s always nice… but I can see so many issues with the implementation of such a system.
