Stats and figures

A report on Tennessee’s handgun carry permits by the Department of Safety.

I found this interesting:

The average time it took to obtain an original Tennessee handgun carry permit days. For a renewal it was 90.22 days, and for a duplicate it was 29.10 days. took an average of 69.47 days to obtain a Tennessee handgun carry permit.

IIRC, they are mandated by law to issue a permit within 90 days. I do not know that they are required to renew one that quickly.

And it looks like the HCP program made almost $1.4M this year.

They are required to issue the original permit within 90 days, but there is no such requirement for renewals.

Yeah, in Indiana, the State Police do the checks and issue permits, so it takes anywhere from 30-90 days to: 1) Go to the local police station to fill out the initial form and get printed; 2) go back a week later after they have done the initial check to pick up your form and the big envelope; 3) put the form in the envelope and drop it in the mail; and 4) get your permit — which you cut out of the piece of paper and have laminated at your own expense — in the mail.

Here in Pennsylvannia, the sheriff does everything. I walked into the sheriff’s office, and fifteen minutes later, walked out with my permit.

If I recall, my “renewal” permit took longer than 90 days, but I was attempting to renew a FL permit into a TN one, and using my DD214 to bypass the training requirement. One or the other probably would not have cause problems, but both actually resulted in me getting a letter saying my permit application was denied (right before I got the permit in the mail – go figure).

I submitted my application for renewal on April 13 at the TDOT office in Springfield. Today is 13 weeks or 91 days and it did not come today.

I called last Monday and talked to a very nice lady in the Handgun Permit office who said they were backed up due to the increase in new permits. She asked for my permit number and assured me they had it in process, but that it could be another week or two. I told her that their office was one State Dept that needed an increase in workers and she agreed and appreciated my empathy for their workload.

Last year my original took 99 days, but the letter with the permit was dated 89 days. 🙂 At least I got it.

Like the Penn commenter my previous permit was issued by the sheriff (Mobile, Alabama). The original permit is mailed, but for renewals just go in, pay the $25, they run a check, print the card, and you walk out.

Remember, I do this to entertain me, not you.
