The Hollywood references reek of Wikipedia – but to my surprise the “M16” entry there does not list the oddly specific movies mentioned. Strange story indeed.
They speak of a M-16 “style” rifle and give the rate of fire of a real M-16, which you’ll note may or may not be the actual rate of fire of the actual weapon recovered. Doublespeak much, yes?
On the other hand, sounds like the kind of crap that goes down regularly in South Central LA, where the cops go and bust felons-in-possession based on tips elicited from drug busts, etc, which is normal police stuff.
It sounds as if the girl in the UK story was “holding” the rifle for someone else and got caught. U.S. gangbangers do that too…situations where their girlfriend legally can buy an semiauto AK, and they just come by to “borrow” it every so often.
The big difference is that the UK big brother is after EVERYONE’s guns, because by UK laws EVERYBODY is a “prohibited person”, in effect. Of course, if it was a real M-16, even the in the US the BATFE might come knocking if your paperwork isn’t 100% in order, in triplicate.
Downright hilarious case of massive damp pants syndrome. Some of the comments were just precious. How these people cope with the world around them is just beyond me, they all seem like such delicate little flowers.
I would be very surprised if that’s a real AR/M16. Note that there appears to still be a (short) magazine in it in the foto, and the butt isn’t long enough either.
My vote is “airsoft”.

Strange story. Wonder where it came from?
Stranger yet was all the references to hollywood movies in the end. I guess Brits need Hollywood references to know what a gun is.

It might have been an AR that was converted into a self-loader ( a straight-pull bolt action ).
The gang-member may have converted it to FA … or not.
Such conversions were common when nu-labor went nuts on firearms.

Umm….
“Although the weapon is thought to be a replica, police were awaiting results of a forensic examination last night.”
The police need forensic assistance to determine if it’s a toy or not? Am I the only one who finds that odd?

I’m thinking airsoft or similar pellet/ballbearing replica. No buffer tube.

it looks airsoft to me too.

Meanwhile, in Free-er land, when the police get a report of a suspected gang member with access to a gun . . . nothing happens.
And if they find somebody with a “replica” weapon that could kill nobody, unless it was used in a crime . . . nothing happens.
Perspective: it’s important.
